Nothing Phone (2a) Plus review – Everything You Need to Know
Carl Pei's smartphone portfolio has been slow to expand, with the Nothing CMF Phone 1 and Nothing Phone (2a) being unveiled just four months after the Nothing Phone. The company has now introduced another new model.
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus is a upgraded version of the Nothing Phone (2a), featuring a new metallic color finish and a more powerful Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G chip, developed exclusively for Nothing by MediaTek. This chip offers up to a 10% CPU and 30% GPU boost, making it an intriguing test.
Nothing Phone (2a) Plus specs at a glance:
The device is a smartphone with a 6.70″ AMOLED display, a Mediatek Dimensity 7350 Pro Octa-core processor, and 256GB RAM. It runs on Android 14, with no major updates. The rear camera has a wide 50 MP lens and a 50 MP front camera. The device has a 5000mAh battery and supports 5G, dual SIM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC connectivity. The device also features a fingerprint reader and stereo speakers. The device has 26 LED lights on the back for notifications and camera fill light. The device is IP54-rated, splash, water, and dust resistant, and comes with 26 LED lights on the back.
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus features a 50MP selfie camera with 4K capture and 50W charging, offering nearly 10% faster charging than the regular Nothing Phone (2a), enhancing its overall performance.
Nothing has released a slightly improved version of their mid-ranger, the Nothing Phone (2a), in their current lineup, despite concerns about potentially cannibalizing the sales of the regular Nothing Phone (2a). CEO Carl Pei believes the popularity of the Nothing Phone (2a) led to the opportunity to create a sequel. The Nothing Phone (3) is expected to launch in 2025, and the company aims to offer enthusiasts a more powerful device to be excited about.
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus is slightly more expensive than its non-plus counterpart, making it a less suitable drop-in replacement. Fortunately, Nothing does not plan to retire the vanilla Nothing Phone (2a), providing more options for users.
Nothing Phone (2a) – In The Box
Nothing Phone (2a) Plus is a sleek and stylish phone, packaged in a cardboard box with its design elements on the top. The box features a sleeve with Nothing’s signature dot matrix font and is sturdy, resembling a cardboard box, including an inside cradle for the phone.
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus is a sleek phone with a beautiful packaging and limited accessories. The SIM ejector tool and USB Type-C to Type-C cable have a unique design inspired by the phone. The transparent connectors are appealing, but the cable is simple and limited to 3A power throughput and 5Gbps data transfer. Despite this, the phone’s capabilities are not compromised. A charger is not included, but it is a minor issue.
Nothing Phone (2a) – Design & Build Quality
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus is a smartphone that continues the design of the Nothing Phone (2a) with a dual horizontal camera arrangement. The design is anthropomorphic, with the two cameras looking like eyes inside a large NFC coil surrounding it. The backside is see-through, a signature touch for Nothing, and features a 90-degree infinity back cover with a 2.2:0.8 thickness ratio. The phone comes in two new metallic colors, metallic Grey and updated Black.
The back panel feels plasticky but offers a slightly grippier feel. However, it gathers fingerprints and dust, which can be dusty unless covered with a case. The Glyph interface, consisting of three light strips flanking the rear camera, has 26 individually addressable zones, enabling functionality such as Glyph Timer and Glyph Progress. The Glyph lights can also be used for notifications, countdown indicators, volume, and battery percentage visualization.
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus markets the Glyph Interface as an innovative way to interact with the phone, with 15 advertised functions. The dot on the back is absent from the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus, which is a bit better this way. The rest of the phone’s design is identical to the Nothing Phone (2a) and is unassuming. It has a nice rounded frame, possibly plastic, and a matte finish.
The front of the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus is a flat piece of Gorilla Glass 5, and it comes with a pre-applied thin screen protector. It has an IP54 ingress rating, similar to the Nothing Phone (2a) and Nothing Phone (2). The bezels around the display are sizeable, allowing for proximity and light sensors above the display alongside the earpiece.
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus has an under-display optical fingerprint reader, which is snappy and reliable. The rear surface offers a surprising amount of friction and grip, with rounded sides for a comfortable in-hand feel. Some users may find the volume controls to be a bit tense.
The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus is a smartphone with a 6.7-inch display and a larger 5,000 mAh battery, which is notably lighter than the Nothing Phone (2a). It weighs the same 190 grams as the Nothing Phone (2a), but is slightly thinner at 8.5 mm compared to 8.6 mm. This may make cases not interchangeable between the two models. The phone’s design, build quality, and handling are all praised in lab tests, with the Plus model being slightly thinner at 8.5 mm compared to 8.6 mm. The phone is available in various colors and models, including Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Nokia, Sony, LG, HTC, Motorola, Lenovo, Xiaomi, Google, Honor, Oppo, Realme, Oneplus, Oneplus, Vivo, Meizu, ASUS, Alcatel, ZTE, Microsoft, UmidiGI, EnergyIZer, Cat, Sharp, Micromax, Infinix, Ultrafone, Tecno, Dooge, Blackview, Cubo, Oukitesl, Itel, and TCL. The phone is also available in electric vehicles, with Dodge unveiling the Charger Daytona EV starting from $59,595 and Hozon Auto unveiling the Neta S Wagon.
