What’s New in Huawei HarmonyOS Next?
The latest version of Huawei HarmonyOS, called HarmonyOS Next, introduces a significant change. It has moved to a single-framework architecture, which means it no longer supports Android compatibility. This makes Huawei HarmonyOS a fully self-developed system, relying solely on its own kernel.
HarmonyOS Next is now focused entirely on apps built for the HarmonyOS ecosystem, marking a major step towards creating a native experience. The shift eliminates the dependency on Android, allowing Huawei HarmonyOS to build a unique identity.
Huawei HarmonyOS: A Dual-OS Strategy for Future Devices?
Despite this shift, there are rumors that Huawei might implement a dual-OS strategy in the upcoming Mate 70 series. According to leaker RuiPlaysDigital, Huawei may offer support for both Huawei HarmonyOS and Android apps in future models. This could cater to both Chinese users, who are already familiar with Huawei HarmonyOS, and global users, who still need access to Android apps, especially those restricted by US trade policies.
Growth of the Huawei HarmonyOS Ecosystem
Huawei HarmonyOS was first announced in 2015 and officially launched in 2019. Since then, it has received four major updates. In January 2024, Huawei introduced HarmonyOS Next, which is now optimized for a native HarmonyOS experience.
As of now, the top 5,000 apps in China are being developed natively for Huawei HarmonyOS, and the HarmonyOS Next App Store offers over 10,000 apps and services, catering to almost every essential need.
Huawei HarmonyOS Market Share Surges in China
Recent data from Counterpoint Research reveals that Huawei HarmonyOS has made significant strides in the Chinese market. Its market share has grown from 8% in Q1 2023 to 17% in Q1 2024, making it the second-largest mobile operating system in China. This growth allowed HarmonyOS to surpass Apple‘s iOS, which saw a slight decline from 20% to 16% during the same period.
Huawei’s Vision for HarmonyOS
Huawei’s Chief Technology Officer, Xu Zhijun, has emphasized that for HarmonyOS to succeed as a true mobile operating system, it must build a robust ecosystem. This includes better coordination between apps, the OS, and hardware, which will lead to an enhanced user experience.
Huawei is committed to developing HarmonyOS as a self-sustained platform, and its efforts are showing results, particularly in the Chinese market. The company aims to make HarmonyOS a global contender in the mobile OS space, challenging the dominance of Android and iOS.
Huawei HarmonyOS: Upcoming Events and Product Launches
Huawei is hosting an event today in China where it will officially unveil HarmonyOS Next alongside the Nova 13 series. The highly anticipated Mate 70 series is also expected to debut in November, and it could be one of the first devices to showcase the potential of the new HarmonyOS platform.
