How to start a secret chat on Telegram in 2 minutes
Telegram offers better privacy features compared to WhatsApp, but its end-to-end encryption is not enabled by default and needs to be manually turned on. Additionally, users can create secret chats within the app for added privacy.
With the ongoing privacy concerns surrounding WhatsApp’s new policy, many users are switching to Telegram or Signal for messaging. Both Telegram and Signal offer enhanced privacy features and collect less user data than WhatsApp. This guide focuses on enabling end-to-end encryption and initiating secret chats on Telegram.
Telegram does not have end-to-end encryption as a default feature. Cloud chats are not encrypted, so without enabling e2e, Telegram can access metadata and chat content. Telegram claims not to use this data for advertising, but this policy could change in the future.
How to create a secret chat in Telegram
Telegram offers end-to-end encryption, which can be enabled to ensure secure communication. When using this feature, conversations are referred to as Secret chats.
– To create a secret chat open the profile of the person you want to start the chat with.
– Click on the icon with the three dots just below the person’s profile photo.
– Select “Start Secret Chat”.
The automatic deletion of messages doesn’t prevent your chat partner from taking screenshots, but if they do, you will be notified about it in the chat.
There is one exception here though, if the other person is using the macOS app you won’t get a notification of a screenshot.
Telegram allows multiple secret chats with the same person and also Group chats cannot be secret.
Check if your chat is end-to-end encrypted or not?
You will need to check for the padlock icon.
Since Telegram chats can be either cloud (normal chats) or secret, it is important to know which type you are using. End-to-end encrypted chats on Telegram look similar to regular ones, but you can confirm if it’s a secret chat by looking for a padlock icon next to your chat partner’s name or phone number. If the padlock icon is present, the chat is secret.
If not, end-to-end encryption is off, and you should create a new chat. Additionally, tapping or clicking on your chat partner’s icon can reveal if end-to-end encryption is enabled, as the words “Encryption Key” will appear at the bottom of the window that opens.
Important things to note on Instagram
Secret chats on Telegram disappear when you log out or delete the app. These chats are available on iOS, Android, and macOS apps but not on the Web version or Windows app due to security concerns. Regular chats on Telegram are not end-to-end encrypted.
