Redesign of Apple watchOS 11

Apple made significant design changes to watchOS last year, which was a major shift in the Apple Watch’s design history.

In watchOS 10, two key changes were introduced in how users navigate their Apple Watch. However, these changes were not well-received by some users, and the option to revert them was not available in watchOS 11.

Control Center Update – Apple watchOS 11

In watchOS 10, Apple altered the function of the side button on the Apple Watch. Previously, it would open the App Switcher, but it was changed to open the Control Center instead. This change allowed users to access the Control Center from any app, unlike the previous method of swiping up from the bottom of the watch. However, some users, including the author, did not find the Control Center feature particularly useful, except for checking battery life.

Limited Utility of Control Center

While the Control Center provides access to essential functions like toggling silent mode and checking battery life, some users, like the author, do not find it necessary for their daily use. The author mentions that battery life information, which is a crucial data point in the Control Center, can also be viewed through the widget on their iPhone. This highlights a personal preference for accessing certain features on the Apple Watch, indicating a need for customizable options in future updates.

Widgets View – Apple watchOS 11

Apple introduced a new widgets view in watchOS 10, accessible by swiping up from the bottom of the Apple Watch while on the watch face. This view displays quick widgets like Weather, Fitness, Stocks, and allows for complications placement. It enables easy monitoring and quick app access, with watchOS 11 supporting Live Activities display. The new interface is well-received, offering convenient access to information. However, its integration into daily routines may be challenging due to the specific way it is accessed.

Essence of Apple Watch Gestures Update

Apple Watch users experienced a significant change in accessing Control Center with the introduction of watchOS 10. Previously, users could swipe up from the bottom to access Control Center, a gesture that had been in place for many years. This change presented a learning curve for many users, prompting Apple to provide a gestures tutorial upon updating the Apple Watch.

Inverting the gestures would allow users to open the widgets view from any app, offering a convenient way to quickly check information without exiting the current app.

Features to add in Apple Watch OS 11 in Future

This feature would provide users with the flexibility to choose between the new gesture-based system and the traditional method. Users who prefer the old way of accessing Control Center can continue using that method, ensuring a personalized experience based on individual preferences.

The update to Apple Watch gestures not only introduces a new way to access Control Center but also offers the option to view widgets from any app. This flexibility allows users to customize their experience based on their preferences, whether they prefer the new gesture-based system or the traditional method. Apple’s consideration of user familiarity is evident through the provision of a gestures tutorial, acknowledging the learning curve associated with the updated gestures on the Apple Watch.
