Android 15 QPR1 beta – First Android 15 update to Pixel 9 series
Early shipments of the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL have commenced shortly after their unveiling at the ‘Made by Google’ event. Google has opted to release these new flagship devices with Android 14, the same version as their predecessors, breaking from the tradition of launching with a newer Android version. The Pixel 9 series, including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL, will be equipped with Android 14, aligning them with the Pixel 8 lineup.
This decision marks a departure from previous years when new flagships were launched with a newer Android version. Customers can expect continuity in the user experience across these devices, maintaining consistency with the previous generation of Pixel smartphones.
Google has made the Pixel 9 trio eligible for an upgrade to Android 15 through its Beta Program.
However, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is not included in this upgrade option as it has not been shipped yet. It is expected that Google’s new foldable device will also be added to the Android 15 Beta Program once it starts reaching customers.
Google has chosen not to provide the latest Android 15 build to the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL devices.
Instead, the company has rolled out Android 15 Beta 4.2, which is the third update following Beta 4 and Beta 4.1. As a result, the three smartphones remain on the August 2024 security patch level with the AP31.240617.015 update.
Google opts for Android 15 Beta 4.2 over the latest build for Pixel 9 series, maintaining the devices on the August 2024 security patch level. This decision by Google means that users of the Pixel 9 lineup will not receive the most recent Android 15 update but will instead have access to the Beta 4.2 version, which is the latest release for these devices.
